Zakir Husain College (Evening), New Delhi Overview
The oldest college in Delhi is Zakir Husain College. Ghaziuddin Firoz Jung founded it as a Madrasah outside Ajmeri Gate in 1780. In 1825, it became Delhi College, and it was recognized as “Dilli College” at the time. It had to be shut down in the middle of the nineteenth century owing to political events such as the Great Uprising of 1857. It was reopened and relocated to Kashmiri Gate in the same building where the Indraprastha University’s offices are now.
Following that, in 1864, the College moved to Chandni Chowk, where the current Town Hall now stands, for a period of time. It was restored to its former location at Ajmeri Gate in 1867. Delhi College amalgamated with Government College, Lahore, in 1877.
